Welcome to the Port Vila Public Library, an important civic space where all the community members of Port Vila should feel welcome to come to visit. With all our friendly staff, we strive for excellence in all aspects of our services to ensure a positive and responsive experience for all our customers.

Mission Statement

Port Vila Public Library provide materials and services to help community residents of Port Vila obtain information to meet their personal, educational and cultural needs, and serves as a learning and educational centre for all its customers.

The Port Vila Public Library will foster the spirit of exploration, lifelong learning, the joy of reading, and the pursuit of information and knowledge for all ages and cultures.

Legislation

The Public Library is required by the Vanuatu Cultural Council and the Chief Librarian of the National Library under the Vanuatu National Council Act to identify its strategy direction in a yearly plan which to detail the actions that will be implemented to achieve the Library objectives and key strategies articulated in the Library Plan and to detail the strategic resources plan that describes the resources required for the year in achieving the Library plan.

Area Councils

Area Councils (AC) is the last tier of Government closest to the communities. They perform the vital role in the administration and development of community priorities and are responsible for conducting community profiles, community development and local governance. Through community Profiles they develop Community/village action Plans, Area Council Development plan and Area Council Annual Plan.   There are 71 Area councils in Vanuatu;

Torba Province – 9 AC

Sanma Province – 11 AC

Penama Province – 10 AC

Malampa Province  – 10 AC

Shefa Province – 19 AC

Tafea Province  – 12 AC

There are also DLA seconded staff working at the Area Councils as the Area Council Area Administrators (AA). They are government officers at the Area Council level and are responsible to administered the Government and non-government services within the boundaries of the area council he/she is administrating and are the linkage between the Government and the people and vice versa.  The 71 Area Councils is made up of nominated members from each sector. The chairman of the AC is the representative of chiefs, and members includes representatives from woman, youth and church.
